"Every haptic vibration alert a user receives on their wrist increases the likelihood of an immediate physical activity break by more than a third," reports The Clinical Journal of Digital Health.
A longitudinal study was conducted by researchers at the Sports Science Institute and the Digital Wellness Foundation. Researchers identified clear associations between the frequency of smart wristband "active-hour" notifications, virtual "streak" trophies, and the onset of highly repetitive, sometimes obsessive exercising. Conversely, physical activities that were performed without wearable trackers or gamified apps—such as local recreational sports or swimming—did not display these compulsive behavioural patterns.
Adults who received more than 10 haptic alerts per day were 70% more likely to walk for at least 15 minutes immediately after the vibration compared to those who turned alerts off. Furthermore, users of apps that rewarded a "perfect week" with virtual badges and public leaderboard promotions were 90% more likely to meet their daily step goals every day of the week.
However, the researchers cautioned that it remains unclear whether these cues directly trigger the exercise, or if highly motivated fitness enthusiasts simply opt-in to more frequent alerts. Additionally, the study's longitudinal design relied on self-reported exercise logs, which are prone to recall bias.
