Article: Studious Silence?
A recent school-based pilot study investigated whether the auditory environment during revision affects examination performance. A group of forty GCSE students learned key scientific concepts while listening to moderate ambient library noise (muffled chatter and keyboard taps) or in complete silence. During a subsequent surprise test, half of each group was tested in a silent room, while the other half was tested with the same ambient library noise played in the background. The researchers found that students who learned and were tested in matching auditory conditions (e.g., noise-noise or silence-silence) scored significantly higher than those who experienced mismatching conditions.
