Festival robbery trial collapses due to flawed memory recall

Police reports following an alleged robbery at a crowded community music festival show that initial eyewitness accounts were highly inconsistent.

A group of festival-goers who claimed to have witnessed a physical altercation near the food stalls were ushered into a community tent and interviewed together later that evening. During the joint session, several witnesses expressed high levels of distress and anxiety. They recalled seeing a tall man in a bright red hooded sweatshirt brandishing a long hunting knife, who then aggressively pushed past a security guard to flee through the main gates. A suspect matching this description was detained nearby.

At the trial, forensic evidence and CCTV footage revealed the eyewitness statements were profoundly mistaken. In reality, the defendant was of average height, wearing a faded grey sweatshirt, and was holding a shiny metal barbecue spatula he had just purchased. He had run toward the gates simply to catch a bus before the festival closed, and no security guard had been present in that zone. It emerged during cross-examination that officers had asked highly leading questions during the group interview, such as asking if they saw the "dangerous physical threat brandishing a weapon".

Using your psychological knowledge, suggest how eyewitness testimony could have been improved in relation to the incident reported in the article.
