Researchers investigated context-dependent memory in apprentice wind-turbine technicians. The apprentices studied a complex mechanical schematic of a turbine gearbox under two environmental conditions: inside a quiet, climate-controlled seminar room, or at the top of an active, windy, and vibrating turbine nacelle. Their recall of the gearbox components was later tested in either the environment of original learning or the alternative environment. Those who learned at the top of the wind turbine performed significantly better when tested there, and those who learned in the seminar room performed significantly better in the seminar room.
