Abstract
Evidence suggests that remote working is increasingly associated with changes in employee well-being. This paper assesses whether remote working hours are associated with occupational burnout in office-based professionals.
Methods: We used survey-based data from a cohort study of 8,500 professionals aged 25–50. Statistical analysis was used to examine correlations between remote working hours, lifestyle factors, and occupational burnout.
Findings: Greater remote working hours related to both higher levels of job autonomy and lower levels of daily physical activity; in turn, lower physical activity related to higher burnout scores. Correlations between remote working hours and burnout scores were stronger for entry-level staff than for mid-career or senior staff.
Interpretation: Our findings highlight the potential trade-offs of extensive remote working on professional well-being. These findings are highly relevant for Human Resource departments designing hybrid work policies. They support calls for organizations to actively promote structured physical activity initiatives for remote employees.
