A psychologist conducted a covert structured observation to investigate public compliance with arbitrary commands from an apparent authority figure. The research was carried out in three distinct locations: a municipal botanical garden pathway, a local museum lobby, and a queue at a self-service post office kiosk. Members of the public in these settings constituted the sample. A confederate dressed in a high-visibility uniform gave minor, arbitrary instructions (such as 'please walk only on the left side of this path' or 'please use the far-right kiosk only') and recorded key responses, including immediate compliance, questioning the request, ignoring the confederate, or displaying signs of frustration.
