Unready and Under Pressure: The Ethical Cost of Cyber-Security Simulations

Researchers at Apex Tech recently conducted an unannounced simulation to test employee vulnerability to cyber-ransomware. Employees' computer screens suddenly froze and displayed a 30-minute countdown warning that all personal and work files would be permanently deleted unless a mock payment was initiated. The researchers monitored panic levels and compliance rates in real time. During the tense 30-minute window, several employees reported extreme anxiety, and one worker experienced a severe panic attack. When the timer expired, a debriefing screen appeared explaining it was an experiment. The research team defended the methodology, arguing that obtaining authentic behavioural data on crisis compliance requires absolute realism and no prior warning.
