A researcher investigated the relationship between financial anxiety and cognitive performance under pressure in a sample of 60 young adults (aged 18–25) who self-identified as experiencing financial hardship.
Each participant completed a demanding, timed mathematical decision-making test under strict time constraints, designed to simulate high-pressure financial choices. Following this, participants completed a 20-item self-report questionnaire measuring their financial anxiety, which included highly sensitive questions about their personal debt, feelings of shame, and fear of bankruptcy.
