An environmental psychologist investigated the impact of physical environment cues on prosocial behaviour in a university library. Students worked on a task either in a brightly illuminated open-plan lounge or in a dimly lit, secluded cubicle. A confederate of the researcher then walked past and accidentally dropped a large folder of loose documents. The findings showed that students in the brightly illuminated open-plan lounge were significantly more likely to assist in retrieving the papers than those working in the dimly lit, secluded cubicles.
