The Integrity Test: Surveillance and Stress in the Workplace

Researchers collaborating with a national retail chain, 'Vanguard Goods', recently conducted an unannounced covert experiment to investigate employee honesty. Without informing the staff, researchers installed hidden microscopic cameras in the staff break room and placed a designer wallet containing £150 in cash on a table. When an employee picked up the wallet, a pre-recorded, booming voice over the store's public address system announced that a theft was in progress and named the employee directly. Two actors dressed as security officers immediately entered the room, blocked the exit, and conducted a high-pressure mock interrogation, threatening immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution. The confrontation lasted 15 minutes before researchers entered to debrief the employee. Several participants were left visibly shaking and in tears, and one employee resigned from their job the following day due to the extreme humiliation. The research team defended the study, arguing that assessing genuine integrity requires high-stakes realism and zero predictability.
