A sports psychologist investigated how different pre-performance preparation techniques affect athletic execution. Using an independent measures design, one group of ten basketball players used a 'Mental Rehearsal' visualization technique before performing a free-throw shootout. A second group of ten players used a 'Somatic Relaxation' breathing technique before performing the exact same shootout.
Each participant was given 15 free-throw attempts, and the number of successful free throws was recorded. The data collected is presented in the table below.
| Mental Rehearsal Group | Somatic Relaxation Group | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Participant | Successful Free Throws (out of 15) | Participant | Successful Free Throws (out of 15) |
| 1 | 12 | 11 | 8 |
