A medical educator conducted a study to investigate whether using haptic feedback (vibrational resistance) versus visual-only feedback on a virtual laparoscopic training simulator affects the surgical precision scores of medical students. An independent measures design was used, testing a small sample of 12 medical students. Half of the participants practiced and were tested using haptic feedback, while the other half practiced and were tested using visual-only feedback. All other simulation parameters and training hours were kept constant. The precision scores (out of a maximum of 25) obtained from the study are presented in the table below.
| Surgical precision score (max 25) under different simulator feedback modes | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Haptic Feedback | Visual-Only Feedback | ||
| Student | Score | Student | Score |
| 1 | 22 | 1 | 14 |
| 2 | 24 | 2 | 22 |
| 3 | 21 | 3 | 11 |
| 4 | 25 | 4 | 19 |
| 5 | 23 | 5 | 8 |
| 6 | 22 | 6 | 15 |
