Environmental psychologists investigated whether gamifying recycling behaviors would increase correct waste separation. They conducted an observational study at a regional sports club, comparing two recycling setups situated in the main reception area: one recycling bin with a miniature basketball hoop mounted directly above the opening (to encourage "shooting" plastic bottles into the bin), and a standard recycling bin with a normal flip-top lid.

Data was collected by observers during a busy tournament from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on a Saturday. The number of plastic bottles deposited by club members and external visitors was recorded.
