An ecologist wanted to investigate whether there is a relationship between the soil moisture content in a woodland and the biodiversity of plant species. They measured the soil moisture content (as a percentage, %) and recorded the number of distinct plant species found within a 1 m2 quadrat at ten randomly selected locations (A to J).
The raw data collected, along with the calculated ranks for each variable, is shown in the table below:
| Location | Soil moisture content (%) | Number of plant species | Rank of Soil moisture | Rank of Plant species |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 15 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
| B | 42 | 9 | 5 | 4.5 |
| C | 78 | 16 | 9 | 9 |
| D | 28 | 6 | 2.5 | 3 |
| E | 60 | 12 | 7 | 7 |
| F | 35 | 9 | 4 | 4.5 |
| G | 85 | 18 | 10 | 10 |
| H | 50 | 11 | 6 | 6 |
| I | 28 | 5 | 2.5 | 2 |
| J | 68 | 14 | 8 | 8 |
