A researcher conducted a naturalistic observation study at a busy metropolitan train station to investigate whether visual prompts can encourage physical activity. The study compared commuter choices between taking the stairs (which had brightly coloured footsteps painted on them) and taking the adjacent escalator.

During the morning rush hour from 07:30 to 09:30, the observer recorded each commuter's choice, also noting whether the commuter was carrying luggage (e.g., suitcases or large bags) or had no luggage.
