Abstract

Background: Online investment forums and social trading platforms have created digital environments where retail investors share speculative financial choices. This study explores the extent to which digital peer pressure and community validation drive herd behavior and conformity in high-risk financial decision-making among young adults.

Methods: We analyzed behavioral and self-report data from 5,000 active retail investors (ages 18–25) participating in online trading communities. Statistical models evaluated the relationship between exposure to highly upvoted investment posts, perceived community consensus, and the likelihood of the participant executing similar high-risk trades.

Findings: Exposure to a strong consensus within online forums significantly predicted a participant's willingness to purchase highly volatile speculative assets. This tendency to follow the crowd (herd conformity) was heavily moderated by the volume of positive digital feedback (e.g., upvotes, awards, and encouraging comments) visible on the original posts, reinforcing a digital conformity effect.

Interpretation: Digital financial spaces facilitate powerful normative social influence, leading to increased risk-taking. Financial regulators and platform designers should consider these social dynamics when developing intervention strategies to protect young consumers from speculative market bubbles driven by digital herd behavior.

Describe Asch’s (1951) line-judgment study into conformity and explain how its findings can be used to understand the digital herd behavior described in the source material.
