The Community Theatre Rehearsal

15-year-old Leo was volunteering at a local youth community theatre for the weekend alongside two older, charismatic lead actors, Chloe and Marcus, whom he deeply admired and wanted to impress.

In the afternoon, the three of them were happily painting a detailed medieval castle backdrop on the main stage. They were laughing and sharing acting tips. Suddenly, the director, Mr. Harrison, walked over with a stern look and said, "Leo, I need you to stop painting now. Come down to the storage basement and help me carry up these heavy iron lighting stands."

"But Mr. Harrison, we're right in the middle of blending the shadows on the main tower with Chloe and Marcus! It's the best part," Leo protested.

"I need those stands set up right now before the technical crew arrives. Let's go," Mr. Harrison replied firmly.

Leo and the director locked eyes. Seeing Mr. Harrison's uncompromising stance, Leo sighed reluctantly, put down his paintbrush, and followed him to the basement.

Later that evening during a break, the three younger cast members were walking near the old fly gallery, where a high metal catwalk hung fifteen feet above the dark, concrete stage. A clear sign on the security gate read: DANGER: Strictly No Unauthorized Access. Chloe and Marcus bypassed the barrier, climbed the ladder, and strolled along the narrow metal walkway with ease. Marcus turned to Leo and yelled down, "Your turn! Come up, it's easy and the view is awesome. Don't worry about the sign."

Leo looked up at the high, narrow catwalk. He would never have dreamed of climbing up there on his own; he was terrified of heights and knew it was strictly forbidden. But he was eager to fit in with the older actors. "It looks really high and dangerous," Leo called back, his hands starting to sweat.

"Are you going to join us or are you too scared?" teased Chloe. "Don't be a baby, Leo!"

Leo could not bear the thought of being rejected or seen as weak by Chloe and Marcus. He took a deep breath, climbed the ladder, and walked out onto the catwalk to join them.
