Researchers analyzing pilot performance during emergency flight simulations found that attentional focus can severely limit sensory perception.
During a simulated engine failure scenario, pilots were asked to manage a series of complex cockpit procedures under high-stress conditions. Over 80% of the pilots tested failed to notice a bright red warning LED flashing on the secondary control panel, which indicated a cabin pressure drop.
In post-flight debriefs, pilots confidently stated that no secondary warnings had been activated. Eye-tracking data, however, revealed that many pilots had looked directly at the flashing LED for up to two seconds but failed to process it. Researchers concluded that the pilots' intense focus on the primary landing checklist created a state of 'inattentional blindness,' where unexpected visual stimuli are completely ignored by the brain.
