Reports following an accident in a busy university plaza show that eyewitness accounts of technology-related incidents can be highly unreliable.
Witnesses who discussed the crash in a student lounge shortly after the event reported high levels of shock. They claimed that a self-driving delivery robot had "sped aggressively" through a pedestrian zone, "ploughed into" a stationary cyclist, and had a red warning light flashing on its chassis.
However, telemetry data and security camera footage later revealed that the delivery robot had come to a complete stop three seconds before the collision. A cyclist wearing headphones had swerved to avoid a pedestrian and crashed into the side of the stationary robot. Furthermore, the robot model in question does not possess any red warning lights. Prior to being interviewed, witnesses had read a social media post by a student journalist asking: "How fast was the autonomous delivery robot speeding when it smashed into the cyclist?"
