Why this study matters

Brain diagram showing medial temporal lobe and lateral temporal cortex, plus comparison of HM, MTL-limited, and MTL+ patients with increasing semantic memory impairment

Schmolck et al. (2002) asked whether semantic memory is affected in the same way as other long-term memories after temporal-lobe damage. The study built on patient HM, whose surgery to reduce epilepsy caused severe anterograde amnesia but not identical problems across every kind of memory.
