Question 7

During a developmental observation in a playgroup, an educational psychologist records the behavior of two toddlers, Isaac and Clara, when their fathers briefly leave the room and then return:

  • Isaac explores the play area freely without checking back with his father. When his father leaves, Isaac shows no signs of distress, and when his father returns, Isaac continues playing and avoids contact.
  • Clara clings to her father and refuses to play with the toys. When her father leaves, she becomes extremely distressed, and upon his return, she screams to be picked up but then angrily pushes him away when he tries to comfort her.

Using your knowledge of the Strange Situation, identify the attachment types shown by Isaac and Clara, and distinguish between these two attachment types.
