Why psychologists use the sign test

Psychologists usually test a sample, not the whole population, so descriptive statistics alone cannot tell us whether a pattern is likely to be real or just chance. An inferential test helps decide whether the sample result is statistically significant, often using p<0.05p < 0.05p<0.05 as the cut-off.
