Study Description

A researcher wanted to investigate whether task concentration is affected by the volume of background office noise (low volume vs. high volume).

The researcher required a stratified sample of 30 participants. They obtained this sample from a technology startup employing 90 software engineers and 60 marketing staff.

Participants were asked to complete a complex coding-deciphering task on a computer. Individual performance was measured by counting the number of errors made during a 10-minute session.

There were two conditions in the study, Condition A and Condition B:

  • Condition A: 15 participants completed the task with low background noise (30 dB).
  • Condition B: the other 15 participants completed the task with high background noise (75 dB).

Explain how the researcher would have obtained the software engineers for their stratified sample. Show your calculations.
