Study Description

A researcher wanted to investigate whether spatial problem-solving speed is affected by auditory stimulation during a task.

The researcher recruited a sample of 40 participants from a local technology institute.

Each participant was asked to assemble a complex 3D mechanical puzzle consisting of 50 interlocking pieces.

There were two conditions in this independent groups design:

  • Condition A: 20 participants completed the puzzle while listening to white noise played at a volume of 80 dB80\text{ dB}80 dB through noise-cancelling headphones.
  • Condition B: the other 20 participants completed the puzzle in complete silence (0 dB0\text{ dB}0 dB ambient sound) wearing the same headphones with no audio playing.

Each participant completed the study individually in a dedicated testing booth. The researcher recorded the time taken, in seconds, for each participant to successfully complete the assembly.

Write a suitable hypothesis for this study.
