Research Methods Stimulus

An investigation was set up to test the effectiveness of a new sleep hygiene and digital detox programme for secondary school students. A pilot study was carried out before the main research project to trial the suitability of the standardized questionnaire used. Twenty-one students of both sexes and aged 14–15 took part.

At the start of the pilot study, a baseline sleep quality score was obtained for each student. This score was based on a 15-item questionnaire designed by researchers at a cognitive science department. Larger scores indicated higher sleep quality. The students then completed a 4-week digital detox intervention, where they were asked to refrain from using electronic screens for one hour before bed. Following the 4-week intervention, a second sleep quality score was obtained for each student using the same 15-item questionnaire.

The researchers needed consent from parents/guardians for their children to take part in this pilot study. Design a consent form that might have been given to parents/guardians asking for permission for their child to take part.
