Social Influence Study

In a study on social influence, researchers asked individual participants to sort through simulated hazardous household waste without wearing protective gloves, under the direction of an authority figure dressed in a lab coat.

Each participant performed the task in a room alongside two other people, who were actually confederates of the researcher.

  • Condition 1: The confederates immediately complied with the instructions and began sorting the waste.
  • Condition 2: The confederates refused to sort the waste without gloves and declined to continue, requesting to leave.

The researchers tested 20 participants in Condition 1 and 20 different participants in Condition 2. They recorded how many participants in each condition refused to carry out the task.

Using your knowledge of social influence, explain the likely outcome of this study.
