An undergraduate researcher investigated whether listening to white noise affects students' ability to memorise factual information. An opportunity sample of 24 students was recruited from a university library. The participants were randomly split into two equal groups of 12.
In the 'White Noise' condition, participants studied a list of 20 historical facts for 10 minutes while wearing headphones playing continuous white noise. They then completed a recall test scored out of 20.
In the 'Silence' condition, participants studied the same list of facts for 10 minutes wearing noise-cancelling headphones in complete silence. They then completed the identical recall test.
The findings from the 'White Noise' condition were: mean score = 11.45, standard deviation = 4.12. The findings from the 'Silence' condition were: mean score = 15.60, standard deviation = 1.85.
