In a trial investigating the effectiveness of two different organic soil conditioning techniques on a rare orchid species (Cypripedium calceolus), 80 seeds were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. 40 seeds were placed in the "Compost Tea" group, while the other 40 seeds were placed in the "Mycorrhizal Inoculant" group. At the end of 4 weeks, each seed's status was classified by a botanist as either 'Successfully Germinated' or 'Failed to Germinate'.
The botanist decided to use a Chi-Squared test of association to analyse the data from this study. One reason for choosing this test was that the research design used independent groups, meaning each seed was only exposed to one soil condition.
