A researcher investigating the multi-store model of memory tested short-term memory by showing participants three-letter combinations (consonant syllables), such as QWY, PTV. Immediately after viewing a combination, participants were asked to count down aloud in twos from a starting number (e.g., 368, 366, 364...) for a set period of time to prevent verbal rehearsal. They were then asked to recall the letters. The duration of the counting task was increased on each trial, working from 3 seconds up to 18 seconds.
