A cognitive psychologist conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate encoding in Short-Term Memory (STM). She used a sample of 32 participants.

Two lists of 10 words were presented to the participants:

  • List A (Acoustically similar): mad, map, man, cap, cad, can, cat, mat, cab, ban (words that sound similar).
  • List B (Acoustically dissimilar): few, pig, log, pen, day, cob, hot, sun, cup, red (words that sound different).

All 32 participants studied List A and were asked to perform an immediate recall task. After a suitable break, the same procedure was repeated with List B.
