In a cognitive psychology study on memory encoding, researchers asked participants to memorise and recall one of two code word sequences:

  • Sequence Alpha: Scale, Sail, Male, Tail, Pale, Nail, Rail
  • Sequence Beta: Brief, Short, Quick, Swift, Fleet, Rapid, Fast

The participants' recall accuracy for the correct order of the words was tested under two different protocols:

  • Protocol 1: Tested immediately after presentation.
  • Protocol 2: Tested after a 30-minute delay during which they performed an intensive mental arithmetic distractor task.

The researchers observed two key results:

  • Under Protocol 1, participants made significantly more sequencing errors when recalling Sequence Alpha than Sequence Beta.
  • Under Protocol 2, participants made significantly more sequencing errors when recalling Sequence Beta than Sequence Alpha.
