Dominic has recently undergone split-brain surgery (corpus callosotomy) to treat severe, drug-resistant epilepsy. In a controlled testing environment, he is asked to look at a central fixation point on a screen.

  • The image of a bicycle is flashed to his left visual field.
  • Simultaneously, the image of a key is flashed to his right visual field.

When asked to describe what he has seen, Dominic says "key". However, when asked to reach into a bag with his left hand (hidden from view) and find an object corresponding to what he saw, he selects a toy bicycle.
