Influence of Early Attachment on Later Relationships

Researchers investigated whether the ability to cope with peer exclusion is influenced by childhood attachment type. They used a semi-structured interview to assess the childhood attachment histories of a group of 15-year-olds. Based on these assessments, the teenagers were classified into three categories:

  • Group 1 – Secure childhood attachment history
  • Group 2 – Insecure-avoidant childhood attachment history
  • Group 3 – Insecure-resistant childhood attachment history

The teenagers then participated in a virtual social simulation where they were systematically excluded from a collaborative activity by peer avatars. Their subsequent behavioral and emotional responses were observed and classified as either:

  • Prosocial adjustment (maintaining emotional regulation, seeking constructive resolution, or pursuing supportive interactions), or
  • Maladaptive reaction (either showing hostile retaliation/verbal aggression, or demonstrating complete social withdrawal and intense emotional distress).

Discuss the influence of early attachment on childhood and adolescent peer relationships. Refer to the likely behavioral and emotional reactions of Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 in the study described above in your answer.
