An occupational psychologist used an idiographic approach to study workplace burnout. She asked three corporate managers to keep a daily digital diary reflecting on their levels of job control and workload demands over a period of four weeks.
Qualitative analysis of the diaries showed that the managers frequently experienced feelings of helplessness and believed that a high daily volume of emails directly triggered their burnout.
Findings from idiographic research like the study described above are often used as a basis for generalising and initiating other investigations.
