Question 6

Scenario: Elena's Hike

Elena was hiking in a quiet woodland when she suddenly heard a loud, deep growl from the thick bushes just feet away.

When Elena reached the safety of the park visitor centre, she explained to the ranger that she had felt absolutely terrified. Her breathing had become extremely rapid, her muscles felt incredibly tense, and her pupils were wide. She also noticed a cold sweat and a strange churning sensation in her stomach. It took about 15 minutes of sitting quietly in the office before her breathing slowed down and she began to feel normal again.

Outline the fight or flight response and use this to explain what Elena was experiencing.
