Investigation into Relationship Stability

A psychologist investigated factors influencing relationship stability. She recruited two groups of cohabiting couples:

  • Group X: Couples who had been together for less than 12 months.
  • Group Y: Couples who had been together for over 3 years.

Each participant completed a questionnaire assessing:

  1. The level of attitude similarity between themselves and their partner.
  2. The level of complementarity of needs (how well their personality traits and needs balanced each other).

Participants also rated their overall relationship satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 50.

The researcher planned to calculate correlation coefficients to analyse the relationship between these factors and relationship satisfaction for both groups.

Discuss the filter theory of attraction. Refer to the likely findings of the psychologist's study in your answer.
