Why control matters

Why control matters

Schematic linking the independent variable and dependent variable to random allocation, randomisation, standardisation, control group, and counterbalancing in an experiment

In an experiment, the independent variable is what the researcher changes and the dependent variable is what they measure. Control means keeping other influences on the dependent variable as constant as possible so any effect can be linked to the independent variable.
