In a laboratory study of reading retention, cognitive researchers asked participants to read short articles presented in either a standard sans-serif font or a complex, highly stylized gothic-style font. They discovered that participants who read the articles in the gothic-style font scored lower on a subsequent comprehension test. They inferred that processing written information is disrupted when the visual typography is unfamiliar or complex.
