A developmental psychologist, Dr Aris, observes two children in a science museum:

Toby (aged 5) looks at two identical glasses of water containing equal amounts. When Dr Aris pours the water from one glass into a taller, narrower glass, Toby insists there is now more water in the tall glass. Later, when asked what his sister (who is standing on the opposite side of a three-dimensional model mountain) can see, Toby describes exactly what he can see from his own perspective.
Sophia (aged 9) is shown the same tasks. She quickly explains that the amount of water has not changed because 'no water was added or taken away'. She also correctly describes what her sister would see from the other side of the model.
