Question 49

Bicycle Self-Repair Week Scenario

At a local youth center, instructors ran a 'Bicycle Self-Repair Week' to encourage teenagers to maintain their own bikes for eco-friendly commuting. The week involved daily live maintenance demonstrations in the main workshop during the afternoon sessions.

Two of the instructors were talking at the end of the week.

Carlos said, "That was an incredible week! I felt so proud to receive the 'Master Mechanic' badge in front of everyone and show how easy it is to patch a flat tire. My group loved watching me work, I really think it will inspire them to start maintaining their own bikes!"

Sarah replied, "It's alright for you, you're the popular lead mechanic and so confident in front of a crowd. My group looked so uncomfortable when I accidentally pinched the new inner tube, popped it with a loud bang, and pinched my fingers. I think I've put them off bike maintenance permanently!"

Whether or not youth center members learn to maintain their own bicycles could depend on mediational processes.

Using the scenario above, explain how mediational processes might be involved in the teenagers learning (or failing to learn) to repair their own bicycles.
