What a potential divider does

Two-resistor potential divider connected to a supply, with R1 on top, R2 on bottom, the same current I through both, and Vout measured across the lower resistor

A potential divider is two or more components in series across a supply, arranged so that part of the input voltage is taken as an output. Because the current is the same through every series component, the larger resistance gets the larger share of the voltage.
