Question 10
a.

In beta-plus decay, a proton decays into three other particles. Write a nuclear equation for this process.

b.

An experimental physicist is given three unlabelled, collimated radioactive sources in a research lab.

They are told that each source emits only one type of radiation: one is a pure alpha (α\alphaα) emitter, one is a pure beta-plus (β+\beta^+β+) emitter, and one is a pure gamma (γ\gammaγ) emitter.

The physicist has access to the following apparatus:

  • a selection of materials with different thicknesses (including paper, aluminium sheets of 3 mm, and thick lead blocks)
  • a strong magnetic field generator perpendicular to the path of the emissions
  • a radiation counter (GM tube and counter).

Explain how the physicist can safely use this equipment to identify which radiation is emitted by each of the three sources.
