In thermal physics, you first choose a system, such as gas in a cylinder or a metal block. Everything else is the surroundings, and the system's internal energy is the sum of the random kinetic and potential energies of its particles. This is microscopic energy, not the kinetic energy of the whole object moving from place to place.
