Definition and sign

Gravitational potential VVV at a point is the work done per unit mass to bring a small test mass slowly from infinity to that point in a gravitational field. Its unit is J kg−1\text{J} \, \text{kg}^{-1}Jkg−1, so it tells you how much energy each kilogram has because of its position.
