Question 5

A uniform diving board AC AC\,AC has length 5 m and mass 30 kg. It is horizontal and is attached to a base by a clamp at A A\,A and a vertical support at BBB, where AB=1.5AB=1.5AB=1.5 m. The support at B B\,B exerts an upward force R R\,R N. The clamp at A A\,A exerts a downward force D D\,D N. A diver of mass m m\,m kg stands at end C C\,C and is modelled as a particle.

Figure for question 8

Use g=9.8g=9.8g=9.8 m s−2^{-2}−2 throughout.

a.

Find expressions for R R\,R and D D\,D in terms of mmm.

[4]
b.

The support at B B\,B is rated to exert at most 4000 N and the clamp at A A\,A is rated to exert at most 2450 N downwards. Determine the greatest permitted mass of the diver. Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

[3]
c.

State one way in which the model of the diver could be refined.
