Question 45

An electric locomotive of mass 800 kg tows two trucks of masses 300 kg and 200 kg along a straight horizontal track. Adjacent vehicles are joined by light rigid couplings.

The locomotive provides a driving force of 2600 N. Constant resistances of 400 N, 150 N and 100 N act on the locomotive, the 300 kg truck and the 200 kg truck respectively.

a.

Find the acceleration of the train.

[2]
b.

Find the tension in the coupling between the locomotive and the 300 kg truck.
