Question 65

A particle A A\,A of mass 5 kg rests on a smooth horizontal table. Particle A A\,A is attached to one end of a light inextensible string which passes over a smooth pulley fixed to the edge of the table. The other end of the string is attached to particle B B\,B which hangs freely below the pulley. The system is released from rest with the string taut. Particle A A\,A does not reach the pulley before B B\,B reaches the ground.

Diagram of particle A on a smooth horizontal table connected by a taut string over a smooth pulley to hanging particle B above the ground.

a.

Given that the tension in the string before B B\,B hits the ground is 209g N\displaystyle \frac{20}{9}g\text{ N}920g N, find the mass of BBB.

[4]
b.

Given that B B\,B takes 0.80 seconds to reach the ground, find the distance of B B\,B above the ground when the system is released.
