Question 24

In this question use g=9.8g = 9.8g=9.8 m s−2^{-2}−2.

Two particles AAA, of mass 5 kg, and BBB, of mass 8 kg, are connected by a light inextensible string which passes over a smooth pulley fixed at the top of a rough plane inclined at 25° 25°\,25° to the horizontal.

A A\,A lies on the plane with the string parallel to a line of greatest slope, and B B\,B hangs freely with the string vertical. The coefficient of friction between A A\,A and the plane is 0.4.

Figure for question 6

The system is released from rest, and A A\,A moves up the plane.

a.

Find the tension in the string.

[5]
b.

Find the magnitude of the force exerted on the pulley by the string.
