Stimulus Text: Vietnam

The Vietnamese economy has maintained robust growth, driven largely by its integration into global electronics and textile supply chains. In 2022, Vietnam’s primary export markets were the USA, China, South Korea, and the UK. Its primary sources of imports were China, South Korea, Japan, and the UK. In 2022, the value of Vietnam’s exports to the UK was £4.2bn, while the value of its imports from the UK was £800m. Vietnam also receives official development assistance (ODA) from the UK aimed at climate transition. In 2022, the UK’s total ODA budget was £12.8bn, representing 0.5% of gross national income (GNI). Vietnam received £45m of this funding.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance recently announced plans to lower its standard corporate income tax rate from 20% to 15% for firms investing in high-tech manufacturing and green energy. The government argues that this reform will attract high-value multinational enterprises, enhance local technological capabilities, and sustain long-term economic development.

Using information from the stimulus material, evaluate whether a reduction in corporate tax rates in Vietnam would benefit the UK economy.
