The UK's rapidly expanding long-distance coach operator, GoExpress, has reported profits before tax of £32m on revenues of £380m in the financial year ending December 2023. As a key player in the UK intercity travel market (see Table 1), GoExpress faces intense competition from established operators (National Express and Megabus), regional rail providers, and budget domestic flights. The recent growth of GoExpress has been accelerated by rail strikes and rising fuel costs driving motorists to seek cheaper transport alternatives.
| 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Express | 12.4 | 14.8 | 18.2 |
| GoExpress | 3.1 | 5.8 | 9.4 |
| Megabus | 4.2 | 4.8 | 5.1 |
| Snap Coach | 0.8 | 1.1 | 1.3 |
Table 1 – UK Coach Passenger numbers (million)
Across its entire domestic network, GoExpress carried a record 12.2 million passengers in 2023, and achieved an average load factor of 82%—meaning only a small portion of seats remained empty on any given journey.
Revenue per seat for GoExpress in 2023 was £28.50, leading to an average profit of £4.15 on each seat. However, the operator faced an additional £8m investment in upgrading its digital booking platform and £3m in securing prime departure bays at London Victoria Coach Station.
Similar to other transport markets, GoExpress utilises a 'dynamic pricing model' where ticket prices rise as the departure date approaches. Table 2 outlines the differences in sample fares booked at different intervals ahead of travel.
| Route | Date when price was quoted | Date of travel | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 July 2023 | 1 September 2023 | 10 November 2023 | ||
| London to Manchester | 15 May 2023 | £22 | £14 | £11 |
| 1 July 2023 | £34 | £19 | £14 |
